Machine Study 01 is a one-off piece carved from a solid block of mahogany, with two large machined voids removing nearly 80% of its original volume. What remains is a skeletal form. Part object, part study, exploring how absence can shape presence.
This work investigates unconventional wood machining and the sculptural potential of what’s often considered waste. It reflects on the byproducts of furniture making: the offcuts, scraps, and subtracted material that usually go unseen. Here, those losses become the focus.
The warmth and richness of mahogany contrast with the cold precision of CNC cutting, creating a quiet tension between traditional material and modern process. The result is a stripped-back form that highlights both the beauty of the wood and the story of its transformation.
